The founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, told why users do not need to worry about advertising in the messenger. Among the reasons highlighted by the entrepreneur are the lack of advertising in chat rooms and the refusal to collect personal data for targeting. Durov wrote about this in his Telegram channel.
Durov noted that he had read an article in which users were asked not to switch to Telegram from other applications, because “Telegram will soon introduce advertising.” The businessman hastened to deny this message.
“Users who rely on Telegram as a messaging app, rather than a social network, will never see ads,” said the founder of the messenger.
This applies to private and group chats, added Durov. The company intends to introduce advertising only in large channels that are read by many subscribers.
In addition, Pavel once again pointed out the difference between Telegram and WhatsApp-Facebook, saying that the collection of personal data of users for targeting advertising is “immoral” and will not be applied in the messenger. According to him, the monetization of the service will take place with concern for the privacy of users.
It is planned that advertising in large channels will be contextual – based on the topic of the channel, and not based on user data. At the same time, the creator of Telegram wants to adjust the general system for creating advertising messages, which is now “chaotic and represented by many third-party ad networks.”
Durov intends to offer channel owners an alternative advertising platform that will help resolve the issue of monetization. In this case, users, if desired, can refuse to view advertising messages.
The entrepreneur also noted that the messenger is working on the introduction of subscription and fundraising systems.
For the first time, Durov announced plans to monetize Telegram in December 2020. Then he talked about the development of his own advertising platform and the expansion of functions for the business.
